The legacy of MLK is beyond question or challenge, and thusly, Congressman John Lewis’ statement regarding Trump’s “legitimacy,” I found to be fascinating.

Forget Sessions and the Bureau of Prisons — my foulup. Manning is at the military prison at Fort Leavenworth. Mad Dog Mattis might not be able to prevent release on May 17, but the operation of the prison might double down on harassing Manning. She’s not your typical prisoner at Leavenworth at all. Manning’s lawyers will have to monitor what the prison is doing over the next five months and have somewhere for Manning to go after release. The attention to her condition that social media have provided should not slack up. But I would not expect the Trump administration to exert influence to moderate her condition.

Barack Obama was President of the United States of America for eight years and likely will retire to the usual post-political life of ex-Presidents. I doubt that he will paint landscapes like Ike did or paint dogs as W is reported to be doing. There will be memoirs, opening of a Presidential library, and likely an eventual move out of the DC area.
Martin Luther King was a minister called to bring justice to the class of people who made up his congregation. Having used direct action to awaken the conscience (read, the shame) of enough Americans to get the Civil Rights Act passed, he moved on to the Poor Peoples campaign and opposition to the Vietnam War. King’s view of the world was that poverty was the economic moral issue of the time, war in its nuclear threat and proxy wars was the political moral issue of the time, and racism was the cultural moral issue of the time. That put him in the position of being the enemy of the state, at first in Southern states, then in the Cicero march in Northern states, and with his criticism of war and the Vietnam War in particular the United States of America. But the his support of labor organizing in the South made him an especial enemy of the employers who loved employment discrimination and the right-to-work-for-less laws. The state assassinate their enemy. Whether that was Memphis, the old Confederacy, or Johnson’s United States of America remains to be definitively discovered.
Obama could never show up as the enemy of the state no matter how much partisan Republicans tried to portray him as such. In office, he was the state and he used state power within the limits that most Presidents face. In his community organizing days, he organized people to work the existing political system not to challenge unjust laws. The very idea of a comparison with Martin Luther King is like trying to compare both of them with Duke Ellington. They were about radically different purposes.
