i’m so sorry; i’d created this early this a.m. and…it seems i’d forgotten to press the ‘publish’ button. o, what a dolt i yam.
Thank you so much wd for searching out and posting this video. The visuals are mesmerizing and the words are a kind of spoken truth that we rarely hear on our planet these days. My hope is that everyone who comes by here will stop and internalize the beauty of this video. To me, it represents one of the only hopes for a way out of our current mess.
That last comment was really from me as I needed to re- login under my own name.
Ditto here. Nice to wake up to.
Nuts, had to come out of sleep mode for this;
John Lewis made his cred’s back in the day; and then sold out to the Clinton’s.
There was a march, which Bernie Sanders attended, and Lewis said he never saw Sanders; but video of that demonstration clearly shows Sanders present and a spokesman at the mike.
He’s (Lewis) an Oreo Cookie and a fraud now; just like his hero Obama.
The Black Panthers rule; past, present, and future…
i’d also meant to note that weaver’s “it’s okay to leave the plantation” title was an homage to malcolm x. he even went so far as to differentiate ‘house negroes’ from ‘field negroes’, the former being those who identified so much with The Big House that they spoke in first person plurals: ‘yas, we do serve the best food here’, etc. the metaphor being: everyday still-enslaved blacks, v. direct comprador sell-outs. i suppose it’s about being closer to power, but i think there might be something more ineffable at play as well.
ach, slow here. i finally listened to the interview, and i guess i find fault w/ weaver conflating the era’s bull connors and george wallace as the same dems lewis turned around and allied with later. when he got to lewis and similar compradors in the black caucus and other black misleadership class, he made a lot more of a cogent case. in the end, i suppose i’m glad not to know what the twitter war on lewis actually entailed. ;-)
the video really is exquisite. the sounds from what i assume is a moog synthesizer sorta hold one’s spirit aloft so that his truth-telling can burrow right into one’s soul and heart. the light and dark of the rotating third rock from the sun…whooosh.
thanks, v arnold. yes to those heroes of days gone by who just couldn’t/wouldn’t allow themselves to get beyond identity politics in the end.
but you’ve made up my mind; i wasn’t sure whether to put this on the john pilger thread or here, but…this is the place. pilger says it right: ‘The issue is not Trump. It is us.’ first he mocks the missives from ‘writers resist’, then compares the group to the 1935 congress of american writers, quotes a couple, including:
“”A writer,” the journalist Martha Gellhorn told the second congress, “must be a man of action now . . . A man who has given a year of his life to steel strikes, or to the unemployed, or to the problems of racial prejudice, has not lost or wasted time. He is a man who has known where he belonged. If you should survive such action, what you have to say about it afterwards is the truth, is necessary and real, and it will last.”
Her words echo across the unction and violence of the Obama era and the silence of those who colluded with his deceptions.
That the menace of rapacious power — rampant long before the rise of Trump — has been accepted by writers, many of them privileged and celebrated, and by those who guard the gates of literary criticism, and culture, including popular culture, is uncontroversial. Not for them the impossibility of writing and promoting literature bereft of politics. Not for them the responsibility to speak out, regardless of who occupies the White House.” [nor are there in the uk]
“No Shelley speaks for the poor, no Blake for utopian dreams, no Byron damns the corruption of the ruling class, no Thomas Carlyle and John Ruskin reveal the moral disaster of capitalism. William Morris, Oscar Wilde, HG Wells, George Bernard Shaw have no equivalents today. Harold Pinter was the last to raise his voice. Among today’s insistent voices of consumer-feminism, none echoes Virginia Woolf, who described “the arts of dominating other people… of ruling, of killing, of acquiring land and capital”.
rather, we have nauseating hagiography and sycophancy, as from gary younge:
“Across the Review section of the Guardian on 10 December was a dreamy picture of Barack Obama looking up to the heavens and the words, “Amazing Grace” and “Farewell the Chief”.
The sycophancy ran like a polluted babbling brook through page after page. “He was a vulnerable figure in many ways …. But the grace. The all-encompassing grace: in manner and form, in argument and intellect, with humour and cool ….[He] is a blazing tribute to what has been, and what can be again … He seems ready to keep fighting, and remains a formidable champion to have on our side … … The grace … the almost surreal levels of grace …”
ah, but ta-nahisi coates: “My President Was Black”, Coates brought new meaning to prostration. The final “chapter”, entitled “When You Left, You Took All of Me With You”, a line from a Marvin Gaye song, describes seeing the Obamas “rising out of the limo, rising up from fear, smiling, waving, defying despair, defying history, defying gravity”. The Ascension, no less.”
and who is this black hero? the author of terror tuesdays, lover of american exceptionalism, and “According to a Council on Foreign Relations survey, in 2016 alone Obama dropped 26,171 bombs. That is 72 bombs every day. He bombed the poorest people on earth, in Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, Pakistan.”
he then chronicles some of the most noteworthy examples of obama’s fascism. and good on him, and ends:
“This is the Call of Obama. It is not unlike a dog whistle: inaudible to most, irresistible to the besotted and boneheaded, especially “liberal brains pickled in the formaldehyde of identity politics,” as Luciana Bohne put it. “When Obama walks into a room,” gushed George Clooney, “you want to follow him somewhere, anywhere.”
and ‘anywhere’ is exactly where they’ve followed him. you’ll remember that clooney was given a lifetime appt. to the council on foreign relations for his devotion…
The legacy of MLK is beyond question or challenge, and thusly, Congressman John Lewis’ statement regarding Trump’s “legitimacy,” I found to be fascinating.
And when MLK announced his opposition to the Vietnam War, the vitriol among America’s war-mongers was not unexpected, since he had formulated his “plan” to effectively address this subject matter. And consequently, the Pentagon Papers, over these many years, proved MLK’s opposition, to be a route beneficial and correct.
And I mention this since I am long-of-tooth and of a grey beard. To wit, the military draft was my government’s “love letter” for the military draft and subsequently, I served 14 months in Vietnam.
And today, when I look to Trump, his rationale for self-justification of the United States–Russia, and to be followed by the British Brexit, I can easily imagine Great Britain becoming another Great Scavenger among the like-minded Dunces.
i reckon mlk’s opposition to war militarism have been beneficial to the opponents of war as an early touchstone, but as many radical leftists, few in number, note: not to the librul class democrats. they rationalized, looked the other way, excused ‘poor, poor’ peace-prize obama and both clintons for ‘being forced to save nation x, y, or zed from tyrants’.
how bleeping crazy and ironic it is to read the #reclaim mlk hashtag on twitter, and the rampant hypocrisy on display. originally it was intended to show how radical dr. king actually was, including his burgeoning disavowal of capitalism. once he and post-haj malcolm x found a measure of unity. they both had to be…dispatched, imo.
i admit i’ve not even seen but unexplored brexit headlines at the guardian, jaango, but most political leaders seem to be on various ships of fools and connivers.
Wow, a tour de force WD. And even Coates is compromised; there are no safe havens left in the U.S..
Flee; for all your worth, flee the coming devastation; your very life depends upon it.
knowing it’s late at the hermitage, i’ll answer you first. i went and found a couple telling opinion pieces that are echoes of pilger’s critique.
‘Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates: The dystopian vision of racial politics, wsws
”He deals in ahistorical and often inaccurate abstractions in part because he is the product and victim, in that sense, of the social process referred to above, the intellectual decline and increasing social indifference and insularity of a layer of the African-American petty-bourgeoisie. However, at a certain point, a figure such as Coates, who claims to be a keen observer of social life, has to accept a certain responsibility for what he writes about and what he does not write about.
Let’s consider the words and phrases that—astonishingly—do not appear once in Between the World and Me: “capitalism” (or “capitalist”), “working class,” “unemployment,” “oppression,” “repression,” “demonstration,” “trade unions,” “factory,” “economy,” “socialism,” “inequality,” “polarization,” “elite” [in the sense of ruling elite], “ruling,” “bourgeois,” “masses,” “left-wing,” “right-wing,” “imperialism,” “colonialism,” “globalization,” “transnational,” “multinational,” “oligarchy,” “plutocracy,” “aristocracy,” “cutback,” “welfare reform,” “affirmative action.”
‘Race Without Class: the “Bougie” Sensibility of Ta-Nehisi Coates’, by Paul Street
when i cross-posed for awhile at caucus 99%, i was told that there are no class distinctions in amerika. blink.blink.
Very well said, WD. Pretty much covers it all…
yeah, big brand names are rarely challenged; good on those who do a deeper analysis. the failure to do so keeps them: big brands one should never assail. i won’t list them, but i do tire of the fealty to them.
wooooot! it’s nigh onto impossible to believe, even though josh earnest had said it was a decided possibility. assange had said that he’d leave the ecuadorian embassy and surrender himself if O commuted chelsea’s sentence.oh, thank you, marym. it’s stunningly happy news. but…i suppose no news on leonard peltier.
even one of his prosecuting attorneys argued for his clemency on the grounds that he’s already served more time than legally permitted.
i’ll go check wikileaks’ twit account.
Yes, great news however; why not a pardon? May 17th is still 5 months of hell away.
Obama would fuck up a wet dream…
Almost completely predictable. Tell me how that gets her out of the grasp of the Bureau of Prisons under Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III.
Yes, it seems that way. On this he has absolute power and only gave 85%.
sessions can reverse it? if so, O gave less than 85%, although math ain’t my strong suit. i looked at the white house notification to see the list: it ain’t there. how many of the 273 or whatever besides the ones savage named were packing peanuts, how many O cronies? ‘
how well i remember clinton not pardoning leonard peltier, but criminal financier marc rich.
on edit: so this is rubbish? “‘A senior administration official said the 120-day delay was part of a standard transition period for commutations to time served, and was designed to allow for such steps as finding a place for Ms. Manning to live after her release.’ well, a place to live is specious, but the rest? if so, is he delaying so T and sessions can reverse it, and he can leave his legacy of: ‘i’ve commuted and pardoned ten times more peeps than any other prez’ or whatever?
@JustinRaimondo That’s the only reason Manning was granted clemency. It’s all to get at Assange. Obama is #DeepState & this is a chess move.
this from melinda taylor, apparently
Forget Sessions and the Bureau of Prisons — my foulup. Manning is at the military prison at Fort Leavenworth. Mad Dog Mattis might not be able to prevent release on May 17, but the operation of the prison might double down on harassing Manning. She’s not your typical prisoner at Leavenworth at all. Manning’s lawyers will have to monitor what the prison is doing over the next five months and have somewhere for Manning to go after release. The attention to her condition that social media have provided should not slack up. But I would not expect the Trump administration to exert influence to moderate her condition.
Wouldn’t DOD not DOJ have jurisdiction?
i wish thd hadn’t dropped that bomb and not explained further. mr. wd noted that he hadn’t actually said that sessions could rescind the pardon, though. so… but does he hint that sessions decided to bring other criminal charges? i’ve hunted around this a.m., and will bring a few things i found at the bottom.
I’d been thinking she had a military trial and is in a military prison, but then realized she’s a civilian now, so who knows how many different branches of govt can still do her harm.
heh. is she a civilian now, or will she become one on may 17? yes, a military court-martial, and the only charge dropped was ‘aiding the enemy’, iirc. of course mccrankypnts and any number of generals are claiming that he did just that (massive taiban attacks!!!) , but her leaks had earlier been deemed quite low on the ‘harm’ scale, yes?
i dunno; it would be interesting to know if her attorneys fear possible or likely civilian prosecutions, wouldn’t it? not that they’d want to give any public hints..
i’d think assange would be a fool to make any moves until after may 17, though. his attorneys said last week that the three or four days’ worth of transcripts were heading to sweden for perusal. but that ‘assange the racist pedophile’ meme is still quite strong, even with his team telling the developing facts in the case.
wikileaks didn’t say much about his offer, but i went to alexa’s account. ;-)
happy for chelsea, but that doesn’t erase the torture s/he’s endured for a long time. that’s right: torture. (supposedly there’s been a dip in the incarceration rate under obama. like all these stats, utter rubbish. they “forgot” to count the millions locked up in *privatized* prisons under ICE, the undocumented who are unworthy to be counted.)
in any case, i consider the words ascribed to jesus so apt & true every MLK day: “you stone the prophets and then build the tombs & monuments in their honor.” & in the honorific monumentalizing, king’s words about poverty & militarism are completely white-washed.
btw, the globe of the world in the MLK viddy is missing something:
will marching against Trump w/no water bottles, backpacks, etc. & penned in in crowd-control zones do a thing about the Blob? or is this whole Trump charade an intentionally-distracting smoke and mirrors? (i looked up The Blob b/c of Hunziker’s article at counterpunch yesterday:
ah, i gotta give it up for tonight, as i’m not taking in what you’re saying. one thing i might be getting is that MLK has been whitewashed into a tolerable convenience (not to the fibbies, of course). yes, he was assassinated ahead of his planned poor peoples’ march on WA. the other might be that solitary (it has many names) is torture. sure is, and did you know that the quakers touted its use in the early 1800s thinking that it would behoove prisoners to ‘commune with god’?
tomorrow for the rest, okay?
yes. he seems to pull his punches, if punching at all, when it comes to the centrality of obama. i mean he can write page after page on Fukushima & not mention the obama admin (though of course it’s implied). this is anecdotal but i can’t recall him ever directly criticizing obama, even using “the obama admin”. i don’t understand it.
apologies if i’m misunderstanding, but might you be responding to my complaint about hunzie’s “Source: J.B. MacKinnon, On Animal Deaths and Human Anxieties…”?
nope. sorry, late in the game today. i was referring to hunziker. i could be wrong.
hope you’re okay. got my mail back return to sender; you may have another account? i’ma try not to notice deecee tomorrow if i can help it. ish.
after that insane narrative of die-offs in the oceans, i was shocked to read: ““Every biologist I spoke with who is researching mass-mortality events said that many wildlife die-offs today really could be signals of serious problems with the ecological fundamentals of the planet” (Source: J.B. MacKinnon, On Animal Deaths and Human Anxieties, The New Yorker, April 21, 2015).
his questions as to “will trump…” seem specious to me, t say the truth. isn’t the sixth extinction locked in now? and what did obama do, he allegedly NOT a climate denier, but contributing to it all w/ his policies both domestically and globally.
on the sidebar is stanfield smith’s jan. 18 ‘Obama’s Hidden Role in Worsening Climate Change’.
“This feel good rhetoric) helps explain why we don’t know that Obama, who says he recognizes the threat to humanity posed by climate change, still invested at least $34 billion to promote fossil fuel projects in other countries. That is three times as much as George W Bush spent in his two terms, almost twice that of Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush and Bill Clinton put together.
Obama financed 70 foreign fossil fuel projects. When completed they will release 164 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year – about the same output as the 95 currently operating coal-fired power plants in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma. He financed two natural gas plants on an island in the Great Barrier Reef, as well as two of the largest coalmines on the planet.” well, you get the drift.
A very interesting article in FARS News regarding swearing and honesty;
And, I agree with their conclusions…
i must be turrrribly honest, then. what a garbage mouth i have, oy. when the chirren were little we had a swear jar. it was always full of my quarters.
Speaks well of your honesty, no?
I have always found expletives to be the best adjectives, with which to express my true feelings.
A life long pursuit…
‘a life-long pursuit’, lol. i dunno, really. i suppose honesty in expressing myself, but the discussion we had on the thread re: balinese sekala and niskala, shadow selves, the toaist yin/yang symbols, etc. caused me to think again that the worst lies are the ones we tell ourselves. and seeing a number of folks at ian’s claiming that (in effect) they’ve done their moral inventories, yada, yada…and know themselves. well, i just don’t think it’s so from what i’ve witnessed. i also suspect that as hard as i try to dig deep, what i’ve found of my shadow side might not be a patch on what’s still in there. my dreams often help me out in those respects, though.
but the study didn’t parse ‘profanity’ well, did it? at home, heh, i’m apt to yell ‘bollocks!’ and fuck me!’ and the like when i screw up, more on the obscenity side of expletives.
As to Ian’s place; couldn’t agree more, re: poster’s there.
I no longer post there for most of the reasons you high-lite.
But then, I’ve pretty well stopped posting everywhere except here.
our good fortune then, amigo. and i don’t mean to singe out his pace, but some of it sets off my bullshit detector. i’m in a bit of a conundrum, having asked commenter peter and anyone, about trump’s post-first presser meeting with reps from monsanto and bayer over their merger, which still need to pass regulatory okey-dokeys, both in the US or germany, or will it be brussels in the end? but creating another big ag behemoth pushing gmo seeds, glyphosates, bt corn, yada, yada…is an inherent danger to food and other crop sovereignty. control the food and water: control the world…
anyhoo, this late in the day, week, i’m almost of a mind to write a diary about it, and hand him that, as we are soooo far part in beliefs and understandings that it’s kinda hard to want to spend the typing. but in the end, to me, it’s capitalistic thinking and models that’s to blame. sorry to be incoherent; the microwave is screaming at me, and the coyotes are howling and screaming as well.
from a couple articles at the guardian:
“The White House insisted on Tuesday that Assange’s offer to submit to extradition if Obama “grants Manning clemency” did not influence the president’s action.
“The president’s decision to offer commutation was not influenced by public comments by Mr Assange or the WikiLeaks organization,” the White House official said on the call. “I have no insight into Mr Assange’s travel plans. I can’t speak to any charges or potential charges he may be facing from the justice department.”
Obama has commuted the sentences of 1,385 individuals, more than any other US president. The White House official said more commutations are expected “most likely on Thursday”.
now the justice dept. ain’t ever said if there indeed are charges against assange; remember that the grand jury convened long ago was sealed? but there’s no way obama’s ‘official’ would be in the dark, is there? pfffft.
emptywheel’s take on it all kinda blew me outta the water; she seemed to have reversed positions on the ‘russian hacking’ meme, as i thought she’d said that going thru the docs found that even the IC believed it was u.s. ‘cut-outs’ (i took to mean ‘insiders’) that were responsible. obviously i might be wrong, and it’s not worth searching all the recent threads. and oh, what a food fight it’s become.
juan cole tasked O for not repealing the 1917 espionage act.
…USian political party R vs. D Junk Politics Duopoly now in full swing as WashDC R and D hacks, zealots and players re-position for the doing of more R vs. D junk politics with the Obama D run WH now in final Exit while the Trump R run WH queues up for it’s Jan.20, 2017 Entry.
…Has been only about 9 weeks since the Nov.08, 2016 POTUS election that Hillary lost and Trump won but has seemed like it has been much longer with all the Misdirection Theatre being done in WashDC. Hillary losing on Nov.08 was not the expected outcome and the DumShit D’s and the various USian Empire Deep State alphabet agency regimes have been trying very hard to pin that Donkey Party Fail on V. Putin and Russian hacking via bogus accusations and phoney baloney “intel “. Doing so instead of dealing in truths and facts about insider leaks, multiple D Party/DNC/Clinton Campaign fails and failures and who was voting for Trump and why. Obama WH regime had and has been telling Big Lies about the so called ” post 2008 recovery ” to USians for years and many USians know this in real ways and knew so on Nov. 08. The Big Lies telling caught up with Hillary and Obama WH regime from ObamaCare to to Wall Street Pay To Play to Obama warmongering and war crimes.
…Barack Obama was no MLK. Where was Barack Obama when Chelsea Manning first revealed truths and facts about USian Empire ongoing misdeeds and evil death dealing in Iraq? Where was Barack Obama when Occupy was confronting the greed and avarice of Wall Street? Where was Barack Obama on TPP? On Libya? On Ukraine? On Syria? On Palestine? Or on Fracking? Where was Barack Obama on confronting / reducing / slowing down / stopping the NSA / CIA / Pentagon for 8 years?
… Who and what MLK was is well known by many USians. Why MLK Day is now on the calender plainly has and had more to do with what MLK was saying having been corrupted and selectively co-opted to serve narrow USian national governance and D Party partisan political interests. As was the case with D Party defusing, co-opting and using Gay Rights politics to play dress up with while at same time also condoning and endorsing what Barack Obama The WarMonger and WarCriminal has done since 2009. Was plain to see Hillary becoming POTUS by co-opting the hopes and ideals of many USian women as being ” first woman seated in the WH Oval Office as POTUS ” was in full play as seen in the 2015/2016 D Party/DNC primary meddling and fixing and tilted contest rule making. Did Hillary and D Party ever represent USian women or was Hillary and D’s just using USian women politics to dress up and rubber stamp USian Empire R2P Big Lies in Libya or having placed Vicky Nuland in Ukraine or Samantha Powers at UN or presenting / parading the fake and failed ” feminist ” politics Pelosi, Feinstein and Boxer?
…Plain to see and know Barack Obama as POTUS has been and is a warmonger and war criminal but as was done with Bush and Cheney and WJ Clinton the knowable facts of this being so with Barack Obama will be swept under the rug, hidden, overlooked and concealed. Justice will be postponed and likely left undone. As a gay USian I will denounce how Barack Obama and the D Party used and co-opted USian national gay rights politics to serve purposes of whitewashing / keeping hidden Obama D run WH sanctioned and conducted warmongering and war crimes since Jan. 20, 2009. Many innocent human beings have been wantonly killed by Barack Obama which should not / cannot be justified or condoned by any thinking not gay or gay USian. Killing innocent human beings is being and doing evil. Absolutely wrong to be doing. do. Always wrong to do.
…R vs. D junk politics will now be deployed by DumShit D’s to assail Donald Trump non-stop via R vs. D junk politics MisDirection Theatre shamelessly being done. Real Hope And Change? Not happening.
…I will be thankful to not see Atomic War firsthand and up close during my remaining lifetime. Is that asking too much?
…Barack Obama The WarMonger and WarCriminal was no MLK…
“R vs. D junk politics”; whazzat, arrow? srsly, i’ll try to answer more later, to jason as well, but for now, may i put up former panther elaine brown on trnn? i really haven’t had the heart to bring any of the ‘march on deecee’ stuff, although i almost featured a bit of satire on the ‘womens’ march’, but…for now:
yes, quite a chronicle of president peace prize’s rule, arrow. nsa? here’s his gift to the new prez and the IC:
“WASHINGTON — In its final days, the Obama administration has expanded the power of the National Security Agency to share globally intercepted personal communications with the government’s 16 other intelligence agencies before applying privacy protections.
The new rules significantly relax longstanding limits on what the N.S.A. may do with the information gathered by its most powerful surveillance operations, which are largely unregulated by American wiretapping laws. These include collecting satellite transmissions, phone calls and emails that cross network switches abroad, and messages between people abroad that cross domestic network switches.”
oh ye gawds and little fishes, no, obama is no MLK: you will appreciate this updated reprise of a 2013 op-ed from ajamu baraka today: ‘Celebrating Dr. King with the Departure of Barack Obama’
“Not only did Dr. King and Barack Obama exist in two distinct but interrelated periods, they represented two distinct moral trajectories. By 1967 King condemned the U.S. as “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world.” He said that he could not morally square calling for non-violent resistance in the U.S. and remain silent in the face of the massive destruction and death being unleashed by the U.S. military against the people of Vietnam.
However – for Obama – U.S. violence presented no such qualms because his loyalties are not with the peoples of the world but with the American empire.”
on that frontline ‘divided america’ trailer i posted, valerie jarret paid O quite an homage, but michael eric dyson went full tilt, full-body crying out: “trump is the anti-obama!”
oh, and it was easy to edit in your changes.
STA; yes to all.
The U.S. is done, finished.
Lets hope it doesn’t try to wipe us out during its last, dying, death throws…
Yes, indeed, STA. Barack Obama was not MLK.
Barack Obama was President of the United States of America for eight years and likely will retire to the usual post-political life of ex-Presidents. I doubt that he will paint landscapes like Ike did or paint dogs as W is reported to be doing. There will be memoirs, opening of a Presidential library, and likely an eventual move out of the DC area.
Martin Luther King was a minister called to bring justice to the class of people who made up his congregation. Having used direct action to awaken the conscience (read, the shame) of enough Americans to get the Civil Rights Act passed, he moved on to the Poor Peoples campaign and opposition to the Vietnam War. King’s view of the world was that poverty was the economic moral issue of the time, war in its nuclear threat and proxy wars was the political moral issue of the time, and racism was the cultural moral issue of the time. That put him in the position of being the enemy of the state, at first in Southern states, then in the Cicero march in Northern states, and with his criticism of war and the Vietnam War in particular the United States of America. But the his support of labor organizing in the South made him an especial enemy of the employers who loved employment discrimination and the right-to-work-for-less laws. The state assassinate their enemy. Whether that was Memphis, the old Confederacy, or Johnson’s United States of America remains to be definitively discovered.
Obama could never show up as the enemy of the state no matter how much partisan Republicans tried to portray him as such. In office, he was the state and he used state power within the limits that most Presidents face. In his community organizing days, he organized people to work the existing political system not to challenge unjust laws. The very idea of a comparison with Martin Luther King is like trying to compare both of them with Duke Ellington. They were about radically different purposes.
apologies for too many contributions to the open menu, but i do want to catch up w/ events at standing rock, aceti sakowin, sacredstonecamp, not necessarily in chronological order; tweets are easier in some cases:
