asylum seekers & caravans at the mexican border

From the daily caller, July 3, 2018:

“Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), saying that Americans “overwhelmingly” want to abolish the agency in a Tuesday tweet, but a Monday poll from Huffington Post and YouGov says differently.

“Now, it is time to do what Americans overwhelmingly want: abolish the cruel, dysfunctional immigration system we have today and pass comprehensive immigration reform,” the senator said in his [july 3rdtweet.

Sanders joins several other lawmakers in the movement to abolish ICE, including New York Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who said the agency should be abolished in a Thursday interview with Chris Cuomo on CNN.”

Rising ‘socialist’ Ocasio-Cortez campaigned on ‘Abolish Ice’, but what she wants now (ahem) is a ‘kinder, gentler, ICE, but she also supports the Trumpeter’s border wall and ‘secure borders’.

Redpepper.org.uk via Beth Gelgia (‘Fear!’) and hondurassolidarity.org’s ‘Honduran regime uses violence against its people – US uses violence against refugees fleeing Honduras’ explain some of the reasons so many are fleeing Central America.  Hint: Made.in.Amerika.™

From Barry Grey, wsws.org Nov. 29, ‘After Trump fires tear gas at immigrant children; Sanders declares caravan members lack a “credible” claim to asylum’

“Two days after US troops pointed assault rifles at Central American workers on the US-Mexico border and border police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at defenseless women and children, Senator Bernie Sanders told CNN he did not believe all of the migrants had a “credible” claim to asylum.

The statement, a clear olive branch to the anti-immigrant pogrom being conducted by President Trump, was by no means an off-the-cuff remark. It came in what was obviously a carefully prepared interview, which began with the CNN moderator, John Berman, raising the events on Sunday at the San Ysidro border crossing between San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico.

Berman asked: “As we look at what’s happening right now over the border in Tijuana, 5,000 to 9,000 migrants there waiting in a stadium seeking asylum, do you think that they all have a credible claim for asylum?”

Sanders did not hesitate. “No, I don’t,” he said, adding, “and I think you have to look at it case by case.”

Without criticizing Trump or the military and border police, let alone demanding the withdrawal of soldiers, tanks and helicopters from the border, Sanders immediately pivoted to the need for “comprehensive immigration reform.” This is a euphemism for a punitive plan that would impose fines and other penalties on undocumented workers currently in the US while allowing some to eventually gain citizenship, combined with a further militarization of the border.” [snip]

“Sanders did not offer any explanation for presuming that there were workers within the Caravan who were not eligible for asylum—an internationally protected right.

Berman then pressed the Vermont senator on right-wing proposals to deny asylum seekers entry to the US to file their claims, requiring them instead to apply from and remain in Mexico—an outright repudiation of asylum law. Sanders dodged the question, declaring, “I am 100 percent supportive of comprehensive immigration reform.”

He then changed the subject to climate change, which has been adopted by the Democratic Party leadership as a “safe” issue unlikely to interfere with its post-election appeals for bipartisan collaboration with Trump and the Republicans.

There is nothing accidental about Sanders’ semi-endorsement of Trump’s anti-immigrant policy. In the course of a seven-minute interview on Sunday’s “Face the Nation” program, he made no reference to Trump’s attacks on immigrants and the democratic rights to asylum and due process. When asked by CBS on Monday, he refused to condemn the use of tear gas, calling merely for the government to “minimalize the level of force being used” in the future. He then rushed to change the subject, saying “there are other issues as well” besides immigration.”

You’ll remember when commenting on Twitter about the staggering number of Palestinians killed and wounded in the first week or two of their Right of Return protests, he’d noted that it was tragic, and that he’d thought that the IDF might have been over-reacting.

“Sanders’ economic nationalism is bound up with his defense of capitalist private ownership of the means of production, notwithstanding his socialist pretensions, and his support for US imperialism. He fully backed the wars launched or continued by Barack Obama in Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq and Syria, and, despite his recent pose of opposition to the war in Yemen, does not call for an end to US financial, military and political support for Saudi Arabia.”

6 responses to “asylum seekers & caravans at the mexican border

  1. p.s. titi and tula helped both of us last night. also: woot! it snowed 8-10 inches, depending on where.

and this wth? post from glen ford came in on the BAR newsletter yesterday:
‘Bernie Sanders Puts Forward a Program That Could Split the Democratic Party‘. and he loves it!

“The Vermont senator’s wish list is genuinely impressive in sweep , a full-blown progressive domestic platform for his expected second run for the presidency in 2020. But the immediate obstacle to Sanders’ proposals for Medicare-For-All, tuition-free public higher education, expanded Social Security, a $15 an hour minimum wage, “bold action” on climate change, fixing the criminal justice system, comprehensive immigration reform, progressive tax reform, a $1 trillion infrastructure overhaul and cheaper prescription drugs, is not Donald Trump’s GOP troglodytes — it’s Nancy Pelosi and her corporate Democrats, who answer to a much higher power: big capital.”

what’s missing on the list, what’s just talking points verbiage, what’s nonsense besides ‘bold action on clmate change’, etc.

  2. terror at the border experts condemn the tear-gassing of children’, CP 11/30/2028

““At least some of the tear gas used on Sunday appeared to be Triple Chaser and Saf-Smoke Grenade, based on canisters found near the border.
Triple Chaser and Saf-Smoke Grenade are both manufactured by Defense Technology, a subsidiary of The Safariland Group. Defense Technology’s website includes a warning to potential purchasers of both Triple Chaser and Saf-Smoke Grenade:

“This product can expose you to chemicals including Lead Salts and Hexavalent Chromium, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer, and Lead Salts, which are known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm.”
Dr. Feigenbaum said Triple Chaser is a particularly dangerous form of tear gas because the canister splits into 3 parts, making it hard to control where it will land.”

  3. 3 And they were bringing children to him, that he might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw it he was indignant, and said to them, “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” 16 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them-Mark 10

and then they brought some messican babies…anyway, which children would Jesus not hug? those not approved by the state, that’s who. “Hi, can I see your child’s papers first please?” it’s funny how even in our submental xmasy consumerist BS, we have some recognition that all the kids should get to sit on Santa’s lap. Donner & Blitzen dump happy meal garbage on all the world’s kids, even in Russia.

beside the fact that these are the children of Empire. very much so. empires are built on the mass displacement of peoples, mainly thru warfare, colonies, etc., and some of the displaced come back, back to the imperial core. and beside the fact that, for the most part, countries south of the Rio Grande all the way to Tierra del Fuego are not actually separate countries in any meaningful sense of that term since they have so little control of their economies (VZ & Cuba being the exceptions and consequently targeted for military overthrow). and Uncle Sam regularly initiates coups in these countries, as it has recently done in both Argentina & Brazil.

the absolute indifference Uncle Sam regularly displays around the globe incl by doing things like shooting DU all over the place, is also flowing back to the imperial boundaries, and within. “shoot those kids if they throw rocks!” business as usual, actually.

    • i appreciate your bringing the verses following the quoted one, j of 9, as well as putting all of this in the historical context as ‘business as usual’. but yeppers, most of the current diasporas come with the made in amerika brand, including, of course….isis.

sanders of course, doesn’t mind that asylum applications are processed at the rate of 40 a day, which slow-mo is also to discourage migrants from seeking it. ‘but they’re mostly criminals, you can tell by their male genders and young ages!’ reading the many, many homages to AMLO now that he’d in office causes me to wonder if knowland, et. al. at wsws are simply paying closer attention to his actual and his military’s moves, and aren’t just buying into the ‘oh, the left has come full circle in mexico again!’ hope. himself and the military ‘special command’ being in charge of the federales and local po-po? good gawd all-friday!

      https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2018/12/01/amlo-d01.html

i remember your having spoken of the ubiquity of ‘fake concern’ for the asylum seekers. yep, here it is again. oh: comprehensive immigration reform! soooo much more humane than the Trumpeter in chief!

      • the DREAM Act? yeah, dream on. 11 years of 1) working 2) paying taxes 3) no trouble w/the law and what else? 4) good teeth 5) clean credit 6) nothing too weird, “dysphoric” if you will, like, oh, I don’t know, someone transsexual, um…yeah, and after all that, no divorces, no landlord issues, assuming no changes to the law during those 11 years and assuming those 11 years haven’t made you want to move back to Mexico or wherever, then, only then, can you become a citizen. (what if you smoke a j in a state where it’s legal and get caught by the federales????) the dream act. indentured servants were what, 7 years? see people! progress.

let’s quote j.c. again, in re GHWB, spit on his grave: “unmarked graves over which people walk & are defiled.” a dead person who infects & corrupts those around them, w/o them even knowing it. and then here comes Bern & Lady Warren, along w/all the usual suspects w/o exception, to provide the whitewash for the tomb full of dead men’s bones (sic). i’mma get a dog just to say, “here boy, come here boy! pee right here boy!” right on that skull & bonesman’s head. (sorry for genderstereotyping in advance my hypothetical dog.)

        • not quite sure where you are at the moment, but yech on warren and sanders’ praise of that war criminal.

but wsws was the sole outlet to see that AMLO’s ‘give them jobs and a temp visa’ meant ‘in maquiladoras for 2 bucks a day (how many pesos? i dunno). ach, i can’t find the dagnabbed piece at telesur. but the love and hope for amlo is everywhere!

telesur headline seems to claim that amlo’s ‘more security forces’ are about the drug wars. just baffling to me how ‘hope and changey’ so many listening to him. good gawd all-friday.
