CIA Director John Brennan emails
Today, 21 October 2015 and over the coming days WikiLeaks is releasing documents from one of CIA chief John Brennan’s non-government email accounts. Brennan used the account occasionally for several intelligence related projects.
John Brennan became the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency in March 2013, replacing General David Petraeus who was forced to step down after becoming embroiled in a classified information mishandling scandal. Brennan was made Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism on the commencement of the Obama presidency in 2009–a position he held until taking up his role as CIA chief.
According to the CIA Brennan previously worked for the agency for a 25 year stretch, from 1980 to 2005.
Brennan went private in 2005-2008, founding an intelligence and analysis firm The Analysis Corp (TAC). In 2008 Brennan became a donor to Obama. The same year TAC, led by Brennan, became a security advisor to the Obama campaign and later that year to the Obama-Biden Transition Project. It is during this period many of the Obama administration’s key strategic policies to China, Iran and “Af-Pak” were formulated. When Obama and Biden entered into power, Brennan was lifted up on high, resulting in his subsequent high-level national security appointments.

Torture
Letter from Vice Chairman Bond, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, to his fellow board members with a proposal on how to make future interrogation methods “compliant” and “legal”. Instead of listing all allowed methods, every kind of interrogation should be considered compliant, as long as it is not explicitly forbidden by the “Army Field Manual” (AFM). Torture Ways
A bill from July 2008 called “Limitations on Interrogation Techniques Act of 2008” explicitly list the forbidden interrogation techniques mentioned in the previous document and can be considered a direct implementation of the recommendations of Christopher Bond. (31 July 2008)

Initial RT coverage: ‘Leaked documents from CIA director’s email reveal thoughts on torture, Iran, Afghanistan’
“Hacked by ‘cracka’
Some of the documents have been posted on Twitter, with edited parts of them reportedly made public by the hacker under the username “cracka.” Apart from the CIA chief’s email, the teenager claimed to have gained access to Brennan’s personal AOL account, which contained the official’s own application for top security clearance.
The FBI and Secret Service said they were investigating the situation.”

“Sour grapes: Brennan’s TAC complains over CIA snub
- During his time in the private sector, Brennan established an intelligence firm called The Analysis Corporation (TAC) that competed for government contracts, including one related to terrorist watch lists. However, things didn’t turn out so rosy for Brennan’s company when the CIA snubbed its proposal for the project, calling it a risky investment.”
When John Brennan got graded as a worse intelligence contractor than SAIC.
Ouch.
- The document shows that, while TAC protested the decision, the CIA insisted the company’s proposal was inferior, at one point saying that one claim made in it was “demonstrably false.”
US government ‘engaged’ in spying activities on US soil
- A 2007 draft position paper on the role of the intelligence community in the wake of the 9/11 attacks shows that Brennan was already aware that numerous federal agencies – the FBI, CIA, NSA, Defense Department and Homeland Security – “are all engaged in intelligence activities on US soil.” He said these activities “must be consistent with our laws and reflect the democratic principles and values of our Nation.”
Brennan added that the president and Congress need “clear mandates” and “firm criteria” to determine what limits need to be placed on domestic intelligence operations.
2007 Brennan says CIA engaged in activities on US soil. WAY b4 he was spying on SSCI tho.
Ah, those were the days…
From emptywheel’s ‘Sheldon Whitehouse’s Horrible CFAA Amendment Gets Pulled — But Will Be Back in Conference’
“Finally, Burr came back on the floor, not only to bad mouth companies that oppose this bill again (and insist it was voluntary so they shouldn’t care) but also to do what I thought even he wouldn’t do: suggest we need to pass CISA because a 13 year old stoner hacked the CIA Director.“

‘Wikileaks Doxxes CIA Chief’s Wife and Daughters’
“The anti-secrecy outfit once known for exposing potential war crimes is now publishing the personal information of civilians instead.
It will go down as one of Wikileaks’ more astonishing achievements that it managed to turn the director of the CIA—a man who some have vilified as the architect of the drone wars and an endorser of torture—into a sympathetic character.”
well, yanno; i didn’t read that section, but brennan is a mass-murderer (h/t: mr. wendydavis), so i’m not sure how much i care about that. plus: they mean to imprison him forever for treason, at the very least.
the pdf’s aren’t the sort one can copy/paste from, so you’re on your own. life here is quite fraught, to say the least.
To son-of-a-Bush Brennan: Here’s War Can’t We be “friends”!
Let the Sunshine IN!!
as always, bruce, i can’t quite divine your meaning, but i will say: i had to quit the first one, lest i’d find a gun to blow my brains out…but the second…yeah, that was hilarious. ;-)
but fuck brennan and his ilk.
“The CIA condemned the hacking of Brennan’s email and emphasized the damage it could cause to his personal life.”
The judicious bastard had been pushing restraint on domestic spying:
Part of this was motivated by concern that the CIA was becoming the goto agency to keep A-murkins in line – the agency was being deformed. To maintain the power-lust, Brennan pushed drone-terror foreign policy.
Now a domestic terrorist has personally attacked the CIA head-monster. What to do, what to do. Can Johnnie resist now pushing domestic spying or will he bring the dronez home?
O my goodness, will Johnnie fail this test of his character?
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.
yeah, but that was Brennan and his lying TAC, eh? the host of domestic spy acronyms (both state and private) must end up spyin’ on one another, eh?
and who will be the first US citizen to be assassinated by drone? but fear not; we’ll know who dunnit, cuz obama issued an EO (iirc) that every drone must be registered. bet that’ll go well.
on edit: and tell the truth: were ya lookin’ forward to ‘farting etiquette’ instead?
and what’s with these being from 2007-2008? and why AOL, the tech-wise are chortling?

Late 2008 – O appointed Brennan DNSA. Gave up AOL then? AOL is a shady operation IMO.
oh, i’d been joshin’ about my next post bein’ on ‘farting etiquette’ (but really it’s other wikiLeaks on bolivarism spreading: OMG! schemes.
yes, his using aol is causing some guffaws.
i took all sorts of time to run down the NYT piece that had (i’d thought) brennan gripin’ to O that his ‘we do not torture’ crap would put them out of the rendition business’. so…oh figured out a neat way to bypass that: timing. anyhoo, it was john rizzo in the end. the Times piece quotes some other nefarious player…oh! harold hoh! as saying what a rigorous moral center brennan has, or some such.
i couldn’t make your image into a stand-alone url; sorry.
A rigorous moral nougat with a pungent shit coating? Jah, jah, that’ll sell.
HA HA HA HA.
well, remember, comrade x: harold koh is bush’s john yoo, so consider the source. mebbe a sulphur/chocolate coating? oh, no; that’s jeh johnson.
seems wikiLeaks has published a second tranche on afghanistan and pakistan? yeah, it’s old, stoopid, but at least semi-revealing.
emptywheel at salon. i’ll leave the link since the title’s clear.

Yeah, well, I bet his wife is spanking the cracka’s ass, now. Still, it all looks too stoopid even for a cracka.
Brennan argues for independence of CIA from political influence …
Brennan supports Iran …
If classified info is in email, Brennan in trouble …
The social engineering hacker was motivated to take this action because he opposes U.S. foreign policy and supports Palestine.
at least then-brennan recognized that coexistence was crucial *for US interests*, and i’m pretty sure these passages i pulled were his (oddly, the iran pdf was copy/pastable):
“At the same time, the Iranian Government also must come to terms with Washington, as Tehran’s ability to advance its political and economic interests rests on a non-hostile relationship with the United States and the West.
There are numerous hurdles that stand in the way of improved U.S.-Iranian relations, but none is more daunting than the theocratic regime’s nearly 30-year track record of engaging in transnational terrorism, both directly and indirectly, to advance its revolutionary agenda. Tehran’s proclivity to promote its interests by playing the terrorist card undermines its standing as a responsible sovereign state and calls into question virtually all of its actions, even when pursuing legitimate political, economic, and strategic interests. ”
bellicosity without basis? who arranged the overthrow that led to the shah, et.al.? who are the terrorists?
but yes, cracka was said to be in solidarity with palestinians, ergo: the prying into his old AOL account.
i’ll have to finish my new post tomorrow. it seems we are on again for figuring out how to best use the ailing safety net for mr. wd’s papa, and the ‘experts’ don’t seem to quite agree, arrgh. but at least it’s lightly raining just ahead of sunset, and the world here is golden and green, with tinges of blood-red maple leaves; magnificent. it.helps.
“to advance its revolutionary agenda …” blah blah blah. Boilerplate CYA; if he hadn’t said that he would have had a neocon boot up his ass.
Sweet dreams, comrade Orange Peel.
